Throughout the play Antigone by Sophocles, Antigone, the protagonist, is characterized as brave, valiant, and heroic who fights for what is in her mind “right”. On the contrary, Creon, the antagonist/ Antigone’s uncle, believes nobody but himself and feels that the death of Polyneices (whom he killed in a fight for control of Thebes) should not be mourned about. All over, Thebes (Capital City State) is a state of flux and the next move is crucial for the success of the nation which is in the hands of Creon. While this is happening, Antigone believes that her dead brother Polyneices deserves the proper burial ritual. This results in her going behind Creon’s back and performing the GBR (Greek Burial Rites). The three rites are prepping the body, place coins on the lips and eyes, and to believe in the afterlife for the individual. Antigone proves that this is necessary and also to “shout it out” to all to know all according to Pg. 99.
The quote “shout it out” is a very pivotal moment in the play. This moment describes Antigone’s morals and values are clearly shown with her passionate and gallant. A quote that describes these actions by Antigone “If you will talk like this I will loathe you, and you will be adjudged an enemy- justly-by the dead’s decision. Let me alone and my folly with me, to endure this terror. No suffering of mine will be enough to make me die ignobly” (Antigone, 109-114). Clearly, Antigone doesn’t care about the future repercussions that can be thrown upon by Creon and the sentry. Another valiant quote of Antigone, is when she says, “I shall be criminal-but a religious one” (Antigone 84-85). This proclamation signifies how religion is a vital component in a lot of individuals minds and that what they believe in should be respected by others. Both of these examples show that loyalty and obligation to your family is essential for one’s self-worth.
Clearly, there is a real conflict throughout the play which is man vs. man. Antigone and Creon are battling each other for what they feel is “right”. Everyone is mostly performing each action without thought which causes a lot of destruction for those around them and also themselves. For example, a person that relates to Creon is Hitler. The similarities between the two are nearly identical with a totalitarian rage, constant anger, and confusion at various moments. This shows how people from different time era can relate to one another.
All in all, there are many reasons why people preform their actions they feel is necessary. But, they all know that they must stick with their decision they think is “right”. Antigone’s morals and values that she believes have come at a constant rate. A quote that signifies Antigone actions is by Ismene. She states that “You have a warm heart for such chilly deeds” (Ismene, 102). In conclusion, this quote overall describes the plot of the play and how conflict arises much more after this and how bravery can only get you so far. Like Morgan Freeman said in Shawshank Redemption either “Get busy living or get busy dying”.
