As we decipher Dr, King message of that “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” The meaning clearly represents that “Freedom” is taken rather than received. Dr, King represented freedom and rights for the oppressed during the 1960s. A word that describes what Dr. King and the activists during the 60’s is “Egalitarianism”. The definition is social equality for all without persecution involved with it. In some circumstances though, this is not sustainable for everyone to handle such as an oppressor. An oppressor, a person that tyrannizes others, because their feel it’s right. For a majority of time it has been oppressor vs. oppressed for many different reasons but, it has always been for something important.
Both Dr. King and “Egalitarianism” both relate to the story called “A White Women Of Color” by Julia Alvarez. Alvarez’s piece depicts how a person’s skin color have such an effect on their social status between light-skinned and dark-skinned Dominicans. The dictator clearly dislikes this situation which results in terror to many Dominicans. On Pg.5 the theme is captured is two short words “Real Dominicans”. To the naked eye, this could be a misrepresentation of what Alvarez is trying to say. But clearly, Alvarez clarifies how at times some things aren’t so perfect and could not be easy to achieve due race problems. Egalitarianism is a clearly example of what Alvarez just said. Color, has been an extreme problem in the past and currently. A quote that describes this to a tee that exemplifies the discrimination of color is “It was not until years later, from the vantage point of the United States and an American education, that I realized that this hierarchy of beauty was dictated by our coloring” (Alvarez, Pg.6). All in all, the is why as a society oppression can be such a lethal weapon and there is really we can’t do about it.
Currently, the U.S. has revitalized the rights movements with African Americans. In the past, the problem was fought for but, wasn’t completely forgotten. With the popular Colin Kaepernick, former NFL Quarterback/ black rights activist trying to preach on police brutality, and white on black crime and how the country has done nothing about it. The U.S. as a whole has been completely outraged with different opinions good and bad. "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," Kaepernick said, via NFL.com. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder." This quote shows a stall of social issues. In conclusion, we can hope for Egalitarianism and Peace but, is it really logical in the world we live in?
